Confession time, I've never seen a single episode of the popular cop show 21 Jump Street (1987-91), the TV series that once starred Johnny Depp. When I first heard about the movie version of 21 Jump Street, I figured it would be just another dismal adaptation of a popular TV series. When I saw the first trailer, I knew that it couldn't/wouldn't be a straight adaptation of the TV series, especially with Jonah Hill (Superbad) and Channing Tatum (The Vow) in the starring roles. It looked like just another vulgar and potty-mouthed comedy aimed at teenagers and college students.

Still, I tried to remain optimistic about seeing the movie by convincing myself that it might be a goof on the TV series, perhaps something in the vein of The Brady Bunch Movie. It turns out that 21 Jump Street is one of the better small-to-big screen adaptations, it's a solid mix of crazy action and vulgar comedy! The movie never takes itself seriously, that's obvious early on when a commanding officer informs the guys that they're being transferred to a special undercover unit. He explains that it's a revival of a defunct 80s law enforcement program and comments that there's such a lack of original ideas, everything is being redone. Right on, sir! It's a self-referential spoof, a vulgar high school comedy, an action flick and a buddy/cop movie. And yes, Johnny Depp does make a cameo appearance!

21 Jump Street opens in 2005 when nerdy Morton Schmidt (Hill) and dumb jock Greg Jenko (Tatum) were high school classmates and didn't get along. After graduation, they both attend the local police academy where they become friends, Jenko needs help with the scholastic part of the program and Schmidt needs help with the physical part. They both pass and get assigned to park duty, riding bicycles and intimidating small children for feeding the ducks (a violation of park policy). They make their first arrest (drug possession), but forget to read the dirtbag his Miranda rights. Their foul-up earns them a transfer to the unit whose headquarters are located at...... you guessed it, 21 Jump Street. Their new commanding officer, Captain Dickson (Cube, Ghosts of Mars), a self-described "angry black man" assigns them to bring down a drug ring at a local high school. That means that they have to go undercover as seniors, in other words, they get a high school do-over! When they arrive for their first day of school, they discover a world completely different from their days as students. Brainiac Schmidt, now known as Doug McQuade, is the popular one while former BMOC Jenko, aka Brad McQuade, hangs out with the science nerds. Their assignment is to infiltrate the dealers, led by sensitive and ultra-PC type Eric (Franco, Fright Night), and identify the supplier of a new deadly synthetic drug called HFS (Holy F--king S--t). In a real role reversal, it's Jenko/Brad who does most of the police work while Schmidt/Doug can't fit it in between his extracurricular activities and his romance with the cute Molly (Larson, Rampart). Oh yeah, the climax takes place at the senior prom.

Hill and Tatum have great chemistry between them, that's a big part of what makes 21 Jump Street work so well. As Captain Dickson helpfully points out, Jenko is "....handsome, and probably dumb." while Schmidt is "....short, insecure and good with money." I'd have to say that Ice Cube gets some of the best lines in the movie, at one point telling the guys to "Teenage the f--k up!". It's also another example of the movie's tendency to desecrate the conventions of the action/buddy comedy genre. The filmmakers realize that the best approach to the material is the non-serious kind. Two grown men posing as high school students, imagine the possibilities? They don't need a fake ID to buy booze. And since they're police officers, getting drugs isn't a problem, all it takes is a quick trip to the evidence room at the station. Easy access to booze and weed can only mean one thing ........ PARTY! While it doesn't quite reach Project X proportions, it still gets out of control and Schmidt ends up with a knife embedded in his back. There's also a really good chase scene where the guys seem more concerned with the lack of explosions than actually catching the suspects. Download Pdf Movies The Free Guide To Horror Rough 21 Jump Street works because absolutely nobody takes anything seriously at any time, it stands to reason that the audience shouldn't take it seriously either. I wonder if anybody even took the TV series seriously? If memory serves, people really liked the show, but I get the impression that it's definitely a product of its time (the acid-washed 80s!). In that instance, the movie does a good job in updating the formula, it's more of a reboot than an actual remake. It's much better than I thought it would be, I might not even mind Return to 21 Jump Street at some point.
